Show Me, Tell Me

You will be asked a 'Show me' question whilst you're moving

You will be asked a 'Tell me' question whilst you're stationary

BREAKS

Tell me how you would check the Brakes are working before starting a journey:

Brakes should not feel Spongy or Slack. Apply brakes after moving off – vehicle should stop without pulling to one side.

Show me how to check the Parking Brake / Handbrake for excessive wear:

(Apply footbrake to keep control of the car) Apply handbrake so that when it is fully applied it secures the car & is not at the end of its working travel.

Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system (ABS):

Switch on ignition, yellow ABS light appears on dash, if it does not go out in a few seconds there is a problem with the system.

TYRES

Tell me where to find the recommended Tyre Pressures for this car & how they should be checked:

In Handbook. Use reliable pressure gauge to check & adjust pressures when tyres are cold, don’t forget to check spare tyre & remember to refit valve caps.

Tell me how to check the Condition of the Tyres to ensure they have sufficient tread depth and their general condition is safe to use on the road:

No Cuts & Bulges. 1.6mm Tread Depth across centre ¾ of width of each tyre all around the outer circumference. (across the middle and all around)

If the cord across the tyre is visible, it means tread is too low.

LIGHTS

Show me how you would check the Direction Indicators are working:

Switch on Hazard Lights, walk around car.

Show me how to check the Brake Lights are working (I can assist if you wish but if you need to switch on the ignition please don’t start the engine):

Turn on ignition. Operate brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows, garage doors, etc or ask someone to help.

Tell me how to check the Headlights & Tail Lights are working:

Turn on ignition if needed, switch them on, walk around car to check.Turn off

Left stalk/stick and twist the end toward the engine.

Show me how to switch Headlights from Dipped Beam to Main Beam:

Turn on ignition & headlights, push left stick/switch forward then Backward (blue light appears then disappears on dash). Turn off.

Show me how to switch on the Rear Fog Lights:

Turn on ignition & headlights, switch on rear fog lights by locating inner movable wheel on left stick (green/orange light appears on dash). (NB: Switch on only when visibility is 100 metres or less).

SUNDRY ITEMS

Show me how to check the Power Steering is working before starting a journey (If the steering becomes heavy the system may not be working):

Check car is secure. Pull steering wheel down with left hand & then start engine – steering should become lighter. Also, by turning the steering wheel just after moving off will give an indication that the system is working.

Tell me how to check your Head Restraint is correctly adjusted to provide the best protection in the event of a crash:

Adjust  (head rest) so the rigid part is at eye level & as close to the back of the head as is comfortable (NB: ensure it is correctly adjusted @ all times).

Show me how you would check the Horn is working (off road only, otherwise Tell):

Push horn button. Usually in middle of steering wheel

Turn on ignition, pull wiper control towards you for 1 or 2 seconds til the wipers activate/work.

Rear washer - locate on the stalk/stick with wiper adjustments

Show me how to set the Demister controls to effectively clear all the windows, inc. the front & rear screens:

Set dial control to windscreen, temperature to warm (red), increase fan speed, side vents towards side windows & switch on rear window heater.

UNDER THE BONNET

Identify the Windscreen Washer Reservoir & tell me how to check the level:

Identify reservoir & explain that fluid should be up to the top but between min and max markers.

Identify where to check the Engine Oil and tell me how you would check the engine has sufficient oil:

Identify Dipstick. Take it out, wipe with a rag, reinsert & take it out again, check oil level is between max/min marks.

Where would you check for the correct level of Engine Coolant:

Fluid between max/min markers. Top up if necessary when engine cold.
